| | Review: Rebuilt the Momentum...Somewhat
| First of all, I still can't get over the fact that Gwen Stacy is back. Just let someone die already. I wanted to see the characters move on and for Gwen to be a good memory, but we had to rezz her for no reason. Ok I apoligize for the bickering, but I feel that some comic characters should just rest in peace. So did Ultimatum live up to its name? Yea, for the most part, but I still keep it in the place of my mind labeled "OK Ultimate Spider-man arcs."
The Hulk's appearance really did it for me, as well as the ending. The Doctor Strange stuff I felt was unecessary, and I felt like it veered off the original plotline. I wanted to see more of the impact of Ultimatum directly, not indirect cataclysmic events. But my three stars goes to the scale of this event and the Spidey-Hulk team up. Immonen's art is amazing as always, and there's a couple great two page layouts. I felt like the artist just went all the way with this story, while Bendis did "eh."
I may be biased for disliking Gwen's return, so those of you who welcomed her with open arms may find this to be one of your favorite stories in Ultimate Spider-man. If you didn't feel Symbiote War, then you won't see too much of a recovery here. I am at least satisfied to see that Bendis ended on a "decent" note instead of a bad one. Here's hoping that Ultimate Comics: Spider-man will behold the best yet. |

| | Review: Bad, good, and in-betwwen
| The events of Magneto's "Ultimatum" hit Peter Parker hard. In the course of these stories, his friends and loved-ones are arrested, almost killed, and just out-and-out confused. I honestly felt more sadness at the loss of some potentially good storylines that were set up at the beginning of the book instead of the how it all turned out. I guess you can count me as someone who gives a thumbs-down to Ultimatum.
It's fair to point out that the last bit of the book is drawn without dialogue. I'm not a fan of that at all; I think it's lazy writing. This isn't a silent movie! I got the feeling that the writer had too much story to tell for the comic. It's like a strobe light--you can see some of what happens, but in the end, I was left unfulfilled.
In summary, I feel this was a poor ending to an awesome series. I'm not sorry I read this last book, but I'm kinda sorry I bought it. |

| | Review: Sigh...bye bye spidey
| | I really anticipated this volume cause I knew it was going to be the last one, so I wasn't let down or shocked. I'm glad that it ended the way it did even though this series was the definition of comics for me. It was time they did something for the new decade which is why I'm excited about the Ultimate Comics Spiderman that comes out July 8 (this Thursday)...it all will feel fresh again but with familiar characters and no need to go into origins. I feel like for once I'm not behind in the comic world. |

Wow. So, I guess this is the last volume of "Ultimate Spider-Man," which is a shame since this was the best of all the Ultimate titles, and the only one that never had a dip in quality -- Brian Michael Bendis definitely had the right bead on the Peter Parker character, and never let this book fall into the violence-for-simple-shock-value quagmire that brought the other Ultimate books down. From start to finish, USM has been a great book, with great heart, intelligence, wit and warmth.
Anyway, if you're going to go out, go out with a bang, right? In this volume, Bendis starts out with a teen-scene domestic drama -- Peter and Mary Jane talking about whether they should have sex yet -- that picks up the slack left by the cancellation of the also-superior, girl-oriented "Mary Jane Loves Spider-Man" series. After this strong and thoughtful beginning, the book slips into the apocalyptic "Ultimatum" storyline, in which Magneto lays waste to the New York City and, I guess, Marvel cuts loose the various Ultimate titles. Spidey's role is central and gripping, as he webs his way through the ravaged metropolis, saving as many lives as he can. Each episode builds on the last, coming to a conclusion that has a believable air of tragedy and finality. Along the way, Spidey's team-up with the brutish Ultima-Hulk is stunning, one of the best portrayals of Hulk I've ever read, and a great showcase for Bendis' version of the patent-pending Peter Parker/Spider-Man sense of humor. This was a great book, and a fine accomplishment on the part of Brian Michael Bendis. Congratulations on a job well done. Too bad it's (apparently) over.
